Could “gay” video games someday top the bestseller lists along with the likes of "Super Mario Bros.", "Final Fantasy" and "Gears of War"?
Don’t laugh. Sure, a decade ago—even a few years ago—the thought of a video game starring a gay main character selling like hotcakes would have caused most anyone to chuckle, if not roll their eyes and shake their heads incredulously. Considering the success of a few recent games featuring gay content, however—such as "Bully" on the PlayStation 2, "Fable" on the original Xbox and "The Sims 2" on PC—the question is no longer as silly as it once seemed.

The maker of the hugely popular online game, World of Warcraft, has changed its policy on gay teams following an outcry from many players. Blizzard was accused of being heavy-handed by threatening to expel a player for advertising a gay-friendly team or guild. Blizzard has officially apologised to the guild recruiter, saying the warning should never have been issued.

Gay men and women are among the first to adopt new devices and online tools, making them an important demographic for online marketers. For the first time, Forrester Research, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORR) asked respondents to its annual Consumer Technographics(R) Benchmark Study of 60,000 households to indicate their sexual orientation. "Gays Are The Technology Early Adopters You Want" includes data on device adoption and online behavior by gay men and women, as well as recommendations on how to best market to this influential group.
