A local gay rights organization applauded the Palm Beach County School Board's decision on Wednesday to extend rights for domestic partners in an updated policy concerning leaves of absence.

Under the previous policy, employees were able to donate unused sick time only to a spouse, child or parent who is also a district employee. The board added domestic partners, a change requested by the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council.
