GLAAD Announces Educational
Partnership with The Hetrick-Martin Institute
and The New York Blade
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today announced an educational collaboration with The Hetrick-Martin Institute and The New York Blade for students at the Harvey Milk High School. The joint partnership will provide a weekly interactive learning experience for students interested in beginning a career in communications or journalism. GLAAD Asian-Pacific Islander Media Strategist Andy Marra and Communities of African Descent Media Strategist Katina Parker will instruct the skills-building class.
"GLAAD is proud to partner with The Hetrick-Martin Institute and The New York Blade to make this investment into the next generation of student journalists," said GLAAD Asian-Pacific Islander Media Strategist Andy Marra. "Young people are on today’s forefront in creating and changing media and we want to ensure a solid foundation in skills necessary for their stories to inform and impact culture."
The five-month educational partnership between GLAAD and The Hetrick-Martin Institute will offer Harvey Milk High School students an array of classes in journalism and media analysis instructed by GLAAD staff members. Students will learn how to identify media trends and opportunities, determine relevant story angles, and develop editorial content. Writing workshops will be a part of the class curriculum for students to learn how to write Op-Eds and improve their editing skills. GLAAD media experts will also regularly visit the classroom and lead specialized discussions on entertainment media, national news, sports media and other key topics.
GLAAD is being joined in the educational partnership by The New York Blade. The LGBT newspaper – which reaches 100,000 readers each week – will offer students the unique opportunity to pitch stories they write for placement in its pages. The New York Blade will also support students throughout their writing process by offering editorial critiques. Students will write four articles that relate to coming out, family, relationships and other personal experiences for potential placement in the newspaper.
