Seth Kilbourn Appointed Executive Director
of Openhouse in San Francisco
A non-profit, community-based organization celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Openhouse provides housing, services and community programs for San Francisco’s large and growing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) senior population.
Following an extensive search by the organization’s Board of Directors, Seth Kilbourn was selected based on his vision for the organization and wide-ranging experience in public and non-profit service. For more than 15 years, Kilbourn has been advancing issues and causes of enormous importance to the nation’s LGBT communities.
“In Seth, we’ve found a leader with an outstanding record of accomplishment to help guide openhouse through our next phase of growth,” said Neil Sims, president of the board of directors. “As we look toward breaking ground on our first housing facility welcoming to LGBT seniors, Seth will play a critical role in defining the associated expansion of our services and community programs, and ensuring we have the resources needed to achieve our growth objectives.”
Working with the Mayor’s Office of Housing, openhouse recently received approval from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to begin construction on a new facility located at 55 Laguna Street—the organization’s first housing facility. The 55 Laguna site will be the first non-profit LGBT-welcoming senior housing facility in Northern California and will offer San Francisco’s LGBT seniors a greatly needed affordable housing option.
“I’m thrilled to be joining openhouse at a moment of such promise and opportunity,” said Kilbourn. “In joining the openhouse team at this critical juncture, I see an opportunity to leverage my years of experience helping the LGBT community realize its fullest potential, as well as full equal rights in our society. My first priority will be to expand our base of financial support and build new partnerships as we grow to meet the increasing demand for our services.”
Most recently, Kilbourn has been a consultant to the Equality For All campaign and was the Political and Policy Director for Equality California (EQCA), the state’s preeminent LGBT advocacy organization. As part of EQCA’s senior management team, Kilbourn was responsible for EQCA’s political, electoral and public policy activities, and directed the Equality California Institute’s Let California Ring Campaign, a multi-million dollar television, earned media and grassroots public education campaign championing marriage for same-sex couples in California.
“Seth's work at EQCA and the Equality For All campaign has been invaluable,” said EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors. “The LGBT community in California has greatly benefited from his leadership. His vision and dedication will be missed, but openhouse couldn't have picked a better person to grow and lead the organization.”
For 10 years prior to moving to San Francisco, Kilbourn held a number of important leadership positions at the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBT advocacy group, in Washington, DC.
Kilbourn worked for four years at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on HIV/AIDS policy and administration of the Ryan White CARE Act. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
