Gays in the Military
New exhibit breaks through 'don't ask, don't tell' policy
Steve Estes thought it should be on the record. Thousands of gay men and lesbians served in the military from World War II to Iraq. Few had told their story.
So the Sonoma State University historian began collecting stories: The teenage ball-turret gunner who rescued three fellow airmen during a World War II bomber mission. The special forces soldier in Iraq. The retired admiral who illustrates that gays and lesbians serve at every rank.
